Average price drops 31% at Indiana Premier Sale

With more horses to choose from in 2012 than last year and another yearling sale in the state next month, the Indiana Premier Yearling Sale finished with a 31.3 percent drop in the average price. A total of 280 yearlings were sold--31 more than last year--and the gross resulted in an average price of $7,730, down from last year's average of $10,147. The median price also declined, dropping from $7,500 to $5,000.

The sale toppers in the opening session held their spots throughout as prices never broke $20,000 on the bid board on day 2.

The top price was the $37,000 bid for a Here Comes Herbie colt out of Andover Babe. Consigned by Black Creek Farm, the colt was purchased by Burke Racing Stable LLC. Last year at Harrisburg a filly by Muscle Mass out of Andover Babe was sold for $18,000. Burke Racing also bought a Jailhouse Jesse colt out of Centergy for $26,000.

An Always A Virgin colt out of Tyber Song led the pacers in the opening session, with a bid of $35,000 from Pay-Maq Racing, Anthony Lombardi and Erv Miller. Victory Hill Farm consigned the colt. Last year a Western Ideal colt out of Tyber Song sold at the Lexington Selected Sale for $16,000.

Always A Virgin and Here Comes Herbie each had two yearlings bring prices of $30,000 or more in the opening session, while pacing sire Total Truth and trotting sire Swan For All each had one yearling fall in that range.

$37,000 top price in opening Indiana Premier session

The first of the two sessions of the Indiana Premier Yearling Sale was held Thursday afternoon in Indianapolis. A total of 155 yearlings were sold for an average price of $10,284, down 20.8 percent from last year's opening session average of $12,978 when only 129 yearlings were sold.

The second crop of pacing sire Always A Virgin, and the established trotting sires Jailhouse Jesse and Here Comes Herbie had the most sought-after offspring. The top price in the opening session was the $37,000 bid for a Here Comes Herbie colt out of Andover Babe. Consigned by Black Creek Farm, the colt was purchased by Burke Racing Stable LLC. Last year at Harrisburg a filly by Muscle Mass out of Andover Babe was sold for $18,000.

Burke Racing also bought a Jailhouse Jesse colt out of Centergy for $26,000.

Indiana Premier Yearling Sale concludes

After a strong opening session, the Indiana Premier Yearling Sale wrapped up Saturday, September 24 with a solid second session. A total of 122 yearlings were sold during the session, bringing $854,600 and averaging $7,005. A colt from the first Indiana crop of Jailhouse Jesse topped the session as Jailbirdjustintime sold for $24,000.

Cataloged as hip 196, the Jailhouse Jesse-Yankee Starling colt was consigned by Midland Acres as an agent for Daniel Lengacher. The dam has produced a 1:57 winner from three previous foals. The yearling trotter was purchased by Mystical Marker Farm, Mike Anderson and Jack and Peggy Hood.

Red Hot Lover topped all pacers sold during the second session, bringing a $23,000 final bid. The Red River Hanover-On A Date colt, hip 137 in the catalog, is a half-brother to Lost Jewels, a winner of more than $200,000 racing in Indiana Sires Stakes. Consigned by Ruddick Stables, serving as agent for Bobby Brower, the colt was purchased by Mystical Marker Farm and Mike Anderson.

All told over the two days 251 yearlings were sold for just shy of $2.53 million and an average of $10,075. Trotting colts brought the highest totals, as 57 yearlings averaged $14,385, bolstered by sale topper Jesses Crown, purchased by John-Erik Magnusson for $95,000. A total of 65 trotting fillies averaged $9,768, while 68 pacing colts averaged $8,724 and 61 pacing fillies sold for an average of $7,459. A total of 130 yearlings were sold during the Friday afternoon session, starting the sale off strong with a $12,978 average.

New Indiana sale premieres this fall

Yearling buyers who participate in Indiana—and those who buy for other programs—will have a new sale on the calendar this fall, thanks to the launch of the Indiana Premier Yearling Sale, set for Sept. 23 and 24 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

The announcement was made Monday by sale manager Randy Manges of Lexington Selected Yearling Sales Co., which will oversee the new auction.

"We're excited about the new venture and setting up shop in Indiana, as the racetracks and sire stakes there are certainly headed in the right direction," Manges said. "We've already received firm commitments from several major breeders in the Midwest, and everything's in place." Manges noted that Midland Acres, Victory Hill Farm and Steiner Stock Farm are already in the initial catalogue with impressive consignments.

"What's really great about the sale this first year is that we've got some fabulous up-and-coming sires with first crops set to debut this fall. Jailhouse Jesse, Always A Virgin, Justice Hall and Sand Shooter all had outstanding initial Indiana books, and we're looking forward to selling those foals. Buyers are going to be impressed with what they see," he added.

The sale starts on the Friday after the Little Brown Jug. "We're definitely planning daytime sessions, with a morning start time to be determined, as we know owners and trainers will need to get to Indiana Downs for their 6:55 post time," he said.

The sale is currently accepting entries and will do so until its April 15 deadline.
